EWMD Asia Pacific Networking Event on 20 February 2012

Culture Club & Gallery, Elgin Street, Central
LADIES ONLY:
EWMD Asia Pacific Networking Event on 20 February 2012

Working Abroad: More than Being an Expat?

Expatriates are typically working for a limited period outside their own country and are not supposed to get deeply involved in their new home country; some companies explicitly don’t want their professionals to engage in the local community and define the personal boundaries of their expat staff by contract to avoid job-related conflicts that may arise if some of their staff become politically or socially active.

Within the expat community, which includes skilled professionals who come to work in another country on their own or those sent by their employer, many (the majority?) are not interested in integrating in the culture and prefer their own social circles, but there are also those who want to engage in social, political or other issues of public concern in their new home country.

What experiences have you made as an expat or with expat colleagues? In our event we would like to discuss the diverse experiences of an expat's life from different perspectives and look forward to welcoming you. This time, we will have EWMD members from Germany, Austria and Laos who are currently visiting Hong Kong, as guests, who will contribute to our exchange of experiences and stories.

The EWMD Asia-Pacific is the Asian chapter of EWMD International, the European Womens’ Management Development Network (www.ewmd.org) We are a registered non-profit society to support networking and exchange among professionals.

Time: 20 February 2012, 18:00-20:00

EuroCham Seminar: “Innovation through Information”

Conference Room 1, 22/F United Centre 22/F United Centre, 95 Queensway, Hong Kong (Admiralty MTR , Exit D)
In March this year, the HK Government launched the Data.one portal, a pilot project on opening up "Public Sector Information"(PSI). Citizens, businesses, and anyone interested in using the data to create value-added services can now download and re-use it free of charge. The pilot project includes real-time traffic data and geo-referenced data on public facilities such as schools, theatres etc.

Around the world, opening up government data has in recent years contributed to many new forms of service innovation.
What kind of useful services and applications could be developed for Hong Kong with public data?

Through the generous support of the European Union Business Information Programme, we have invited leading experts from Europe to share their experience of open data policies and projects.
We will also discuss potential applications for other public data usage, such as cultural and environmental data.

PSI is a new topic in Hong Kong, but with our high mobile phone usage in the city, we believe that many useful applications will be created.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to an interactive and inspiring seminar on 30 November, 8:30-11:30. The detailed programme rundown is posted here www.hkforesight.org/Join us for an interactive seminar to learn about European PSI practices, and how these could be applied in Hong Kong.

EuroCham Luncheon Conference:EUROPE: OPPORTUNITY IN ADVERSITY

Club Lusitano 27F, 16 Ice House Street, Central, Hong Kong
LUNCHEON CONFERENCE WITH BEN JONES,
ANALYST AT THE ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT
"EUROPE: OPPORTUNITY IN ADVERSITY"
12:00 - 2:00 pm

Amidst economic turmoil and financial speculation in the EU region, the recent EU Summit held in October 2011 has set ambitious goals of recovery, financial stability and sustainable job creating growth. A stronger and deeper union, both fiscal and economic is advocated by EU leaders, together with bank recapitalization and sustainability of public finance. Big steps are being taken in such direction, such as the creation of new pan-European entities (e.g. EFSF), but are these measures enough to contain the public debt crisis?
The Greek referendum on the bailout has opened the debate on the prospects of the EU in the mid-term and our guest speaker will analyze the potential economic and political scenarios in the coming years. Is the disintegration of the EU possible, or on the contrary, will the adversity strengthen the region and move towards a more federal union?
Finally, what are the medium-term implications for a sustainable growth? How can the EU safeguard its competitiveness in a context of highly competitive economies such as the BRICs? Which and where are the opportunities behind the crisis for the EU economy?
Ben Jones is a member of the Economist Intelligence Unit's Western Europe team of analysts. He is the editor of the EIU's European Union Regional Overview, covering the EU institutions, EU policy developments and the political and economic outlook for the region as a whole. Since joining the department in 2000 he has covered a number of European countries.

Hong Kong Bankers Club, 43/F Gloucester Tower, The Landmark
INVITATION to a EUROCHAM LUNCHEON CONFERENCE:

“How to break the European Dreadlock”
With Guy Verhofstadt, Former Prime Minister of Belgium

Guy Verhofstadt is currently a member of the European Parliament and the leader of the Flemish Liberals. His bright political resume, which started in the 70s highlights titles such as Finance Minister and Prime Minister of Belgium (1999-2008). Guy is a fervent pan-European well known for his strong pro-EU position, his support of Euro-bonds and his controversial views on the current rescue measures issued by the EU. His open and constructive criticism to Barroso’s Commission makes him a very polemic politician who advocates for a single EU plan versus 27 national plans. Guy has published several books on the topic of the EU crisis with his own views and proposals on “how to make the EU part of the solution”.

EUROPE AND ASIA: WHERE NEXT ON TRADE POLICY

FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS’ CLUB , 12:30
EUROPE AND ASIA: WHERE NEXT ON TRADE POLICY?

Speaker: Karel De Gucht
European Union Trade Commissioner

An atmosphere of anxiety looms over the world economy. Developed countries fear competition from emerging economies. Europe's budgetary situation spreads uncertainty across the world. Stuttering growth and high levels of unemployment fan the risk of protectionism.
The implications for policy makers both in Asia and in Europe are far-reaching. And yet, the stakeholders can only begin to tackle the current economic and political challenges if they maintain an open trade regime and strengthen their economic relationship. Mr. De Gucht will share his views on the above and more at the lunch.
Karel De Gucht joined the European Commission in 2009, taking on the Development and Humanitarian Aid portfolio, before moving to his current position in February 2010. Prior to joining the commission of the European Union, he was Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium.

Shanghai Art Museum (12.10. - 7.11.)
The paintings of the Austrian Artist Xenia Hausner are shown at the Shanghai Art Museum, Ocotber 12 - November 7th.

Xenia Hausner paints people. She stages encounters in imagined biographies. The focus of her new works is a collection of pictures, never before exhibited, dealing with love and loss and the catastrophes of our present age. These large-format pieces are a continuation of a series which in its entirety explores interpersonal confrontations and balancing acts in relationships. Xenia Hausner is concerned with disturbances in daily life when reliable contexts and familiar systems no longer work.

Joint Chamber Event: Will Germany continue to outperform the global economy?

Ballroom, 5/F, Island Shangri-La Hotel, Hong Kong
In the first half of 2011 the global economy continues to grow steadily. However, Europe suffers from a severe sovereign debt crisis and the growth of the US economy is still sluggish. Dramatic events in Northern Africa and the Middle East Region
added to the high volatility in the markets while there are indications that the Chinese economic growth might slow down.

Dr. Jörg Krämer, Chief Economist of Commerzbank, will pay particular attention to the European sovereign debt crisis and he will show that Germany could outperform the rest of the Euro-zone for years. He will also give his perspective on the outlook for Asia. Marketwise, he will analyse the ECB monetary policy and highlight Commerzbank’s outlook for bond yields and FX developments.

Hong Kong Bankers Club, 43/F, Edinburgh Tower, The Landmark, Central
Public, accessible and accurate information can create new products and businesses. The overall market size for PSI in the EU is estimated at 27 billion Euros. Re-use of public sector information means using it in new ways by adding value to it, combining information from different sources, making mash-ups and new applications, both for commercial and non-commercial purposes. Examples include real time traffic information and bus timetables together with maps downloaded to smart phones. Public sector information has great economic potential: it generates new businesses and jobs and provides consumers with more choice and more value for money.
